Google has suggested that it might be a good idea to have backlinks coming from low quality sites removed. The simplest way of doing this is to contact the site owner and asked them to remove the link. If an e-mail link isn’t obvious, then you can get this information by doing a quick “whois” search for the site in question. If the domain in question has private registration and the owners details are not visible then it may be possible to contact their web hosting company requesting that your e-mail be forwarded to the site owner.
On the Google Webmaster Central blog they suggest that efforts should be made to have these links removed especially if they’re coming from undesirable sites. However this is a time-consuming process and your time may better be served by increasing the number of high-quality backlinks pointing to your site.
Other aspects you might wish to consider are the quality of your site design and your content. Google admits that they understand that many factors are out of the control of the site owner and bearing that in mind will favour a quality site with original content and excellent linking structure. This can plainly be seen with many of the most popular sites on the Internet.
Site owners should strive to deliver a clean, quality and well-organised site that is interesting to the person browsing your site. This will sound like common sense to many people, but it’s amazing how many people neglect the simple principles. I don’t think it’s worth your time or effort to try to remove low quality backlinks from your site, but rather to concentrate on building high-quality inbound links. It’s really important to make people aware of the presence of your site and if you’re offering something special, you’ll receive a constant flow of return visitors and these people will link to your site to. Don’t underestimate the power of Web 2.0, social marketing and try to encourage people to spread the word about your site by using twitter and social bookmarking methods.
As you can see to concentrate on the aspects of your site that Google favours will be far more productive than removing low quality inbound links.
