As we all know Twitter can be an amazing medium for introducing us to new people, to build relationships and connect with current and future customers. Twitter has an audience of 15.8 Million users interacting with the Micro-blogging site on a daily basis. (according to Quantcast, October 2010). How many of those people might be interested in what we have to offer? How many opportunities are available for us as Internet Marketers to realize our dreams? Marketing on Twitter is a bit of an art and which deserves some thought. Many Internet Marketers have been taken in by the idea that all we need to do is to build our followers quickly and then use an auto posting service to send out links to Clickbank products. This train of thought is flawed, I mean do you click on all of those adds you get spammed with each day? I know I don’t!
So far in this series of Twitter articles I have described methods of customizing your profile and how to create a professional Twitter background page. Now we need to breathe life into our Twitter account by starting to participate and contribute to the Twitter community. It is now time for us to think about what we are going to say.
A good technique is to monitor Google for new activity and to create a Google alert to notify us about the breaking news in our niche. We can get Google to email this information to us, or we can create an RSS feed and use a service like twitterfeed.com to send updates to our profiles. With a little creativity and a willing to learn you can also craft some good tweets by using Yahoo pipes or Dapper. There is a bit of a learning curve with this strategy but it’s well worth the effort.You can also get your website to update your Twitter profile and all of your social networks at once! This can be done by signing up to Ping.fm and adding or joining all of the social networks which Ping.fm interacts with.
I recommend using the above techniques if you’re serious about marketing on Twitter, but another aspect which is more imortant is you and the contributions that a real person makes. An automated system will never be as effective, because it lacks one of our most important traits…our personality!
The first part of creating a successful Tweet is to give some thought to your followers, will they appreciate and benefit from this this Tweet? How will it add value to their Twitter experience. Think about interacting with people, first you craft an interesting and useful update with the view of getting your followers to share that tweet. You are then given an opportunity to respond to those who reply to your Tweet “@” and those who retweet “RT” your updates.
If you are crafting your Tweets well you will get a good response from your updates and have the opportunity to strike up discussions, build trust and engage with people. Do this well and there are some great opportunities for making money.
Twitter is also an effective medium for generating new and unique free traffic to your website, write interesting Tweets and you will see a significant increase in visitors, Adsense revenue and sales. You can also create relationships with people by tweeting about their sites and their content. Your audience will appreciate this information and you will gain a reputation as someone who has something worthy to say.
I hope this article has given you the opportunity to look at your Twitter management and activities in a thoughtful way and to understand why quality content is important. Applying these simple techniques will open you up to a large audience who are interested in what you have to say and what you have to offer.
