One of the most important tasks that an Internet marketer has to do is backlinking. The more backlinks you have pointing to your site, the greater your visibility in the search engine results. You might have the best looking site on the planet, but without backlinks you will never be found.

A backlink is a link from another pointing to your website. The search engines find these links and follow them back to your website and index the content found, thus making it easier for people to find you from a search query. A backlink is essentially a vote for your site and the more links you have coming from established authority sites in your niche the better.As you backlinks increase, so does your popularity and you can gain a good placement hopefully at the top of the search results.

You can place back links in forum signatures (this is a great way to get traffic too), on blogs,in the resource boxes in articles, press releases, directories, twitter and anywhere where you can place a link. Posting on blogs in your niche is an excellent strategy, but don’t follow the lead of the spammer, read the posts that you find and provide some valuable content. As a blog owner I approve comments, but only when it’s obvious that the poster has taken some time to read my content and to write an intelligent reply, all the rest are sent to comment spam hell.

So how do you go about creating an effective backlink?

If you’ve done your niche research correctly and you’ll have a good idea of the keywords which you want to rank for in the search engines. You need to construct your backlink in the following way:

Once you have placed this link on a blog post, forum etc and it has been approved the next thing is to ping the site where your link resides.

Ezinearticles is an excellent resource and by writing quality articles based around your keyword phrases you will receive traffic for years to come. I’m still getting paid for products I created years ago and don’t bother promoting anymore. It’s a great way to build up multiple sources of income which will benefit you in the both the short and long term. There is also the added bonus that webmasters will publish your article if they like it and you’ll end up getting more and more links to your website. This traffic is highly targeted to and results in impressive conversions.

Another idea you can try is to use Google Alerts and enter the keyword(s) that you are targeting, choose results from blogs and get Google to email you everytime your keyword is mentioned. Isn’t that simple? You have Google working for you, all you need to do is write a useful comment on the blogs found and you’ll gradually build up a load of backlinks.

Don’t forget about the power of social media either, sites like Twitter and Facebook are great places to drop your links as they are indexed regularly by the search engines.
